Long Island Rail Road – Hurricane Sandy Restoration Projects
Litehouse Builders played a pivotal role in the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Hurricane Sandy Restoration Projects, delivering critical infrastructure repairs and upgrades across multiple LIRR facilities. The work addressed extensive storm‑related damage and included major improvements at the Hillside Maintenance Complex (Building 1), Westbury Station, and Penn Station.
At the Hillside Maintenance Complex, the scope included replacing a large portion of the PVC roof at the Upper Car Shop, covering approximately 26,000 square feet. This work involved removing deteriorated roofing materials, installing new insulation and membrane, and replacing pitch pockets and roof drains to ensure proper drainage. Detailed work on metal flashing and trim further enhanced the roof’s durability and weather resistance. Additionally, new generators were provided to ensure a reliable power supply, complete with full specifications and warranties.
At Westbury Station, Litehouse Builders installed a prefabricated platform shelter featuring custom architectural details. At Penn Station, the team replaced a side‑coiling security grille, improving both safety and accessibility for commuters. All work required precise coordination to meet strict operational schedules and adhere to rigorous safety protocols, especially given the limited work windows within active transportation hubs.
Through this comprehensive restoration effort, the LIRR now benefits from strengthened infrastructure that enhances safety, service reliability, and long‑term functionality — better protecting the system against future weather‑related disruptions. Litehouse Builders’ expert management ensured these essential upgrades were completed efficiently and to the highest standards, reinforcing the LIRR’s ability to continue serving the region’s commuters.
